How to choose a swimming pool

Fast-set pools

Fast-set pools are round PVC pools without a frame. They’re an economical choice and easy to put up and take down by one person, making them an ideal cottage pool. These are generally smaller in diameter and height and have an inflatable ring at the top and the sides rise up as you fill the pool with water.

Steel-frame pools

If you want to make a long-term investment, choose a steel-frame model. Steel-frame pools have a sturdy steel frame with a reinforced liner inside and are available in more shapes, sizes and heights. They require more set-up time with at least two people, so are ideal if you want to put your pool up for an entire season. They do still need to be drained, disassembled and stored off-season.

Size

When choosing the size, make sure you leave enough clearance around the edge of the pool for people to pass by and to give you easy access to your pump. Consider how many people will be using the pool.

Height

If there will be kids using the pool, consider their height. Fast-set pools have sides that go up to about 48 inches, while steel frame pools can be up to 52 inches tall. 

Shape

If you want to use a pool for exercise, such as swimming laps, you will want a rectangular pool. A round pool is great for family recreation.

Is the pump sufficient?

All above ground pools come with a pump that’s measured by how many gallons it filters per hour. Keep in mind that a more powerful pump will mean you need fewer chemicals to keep the water clean.

Does it come with accessories?

Some above ground pools will come with an accessory and/or maintenance pack, including items like a ladder, cover, pool skimmer, ground sheet or repair kit. You can buy any additional items you need separately.

How much storage do you have?

Since all pools will need to be drained, taken down and stored for the cold season, make sure you choose a pool that you can accommodate in a garage or storage area. Fast-set pools require the least amount of space, while steel frame pools will generally take up more room.
